Momentary 3PDT Footswitch
These Momentary 3PDT footswitches look very similar to the much-more-common
latching
3PDT switches, but these
do not latch
- because they're "Momentary" switches, you have to hold the button down in order to switch the connections. The middle and bottom rows of terminals (the bottom row is the row that corresponds with the gap in the threading) are "normally closed", meaning that they're connected when the switch is at rest. When you press down on the switch, this back row of terminals disconnects from the middle row of terminals, and the middle row of terminals connects with the top row of terminals.
Most Momentary switches are SPST or at best DPDT, so having this 3PDT option greatly expands the amount of possibilities that you have when designing a new circuit or piece of equipment. I design guitar/bass/synthesizer effect pedals, and these switches have more or less replaced all of the other Momentary footswitches I used to use because they're so supremely versatile...the extra connections are
always
helpful to have, even if just for wiring up an LED to make it clear to the user that the switch has been depressed! Another bonus is that these Momentary 3PDT's share the same thread pattern as the more common Latching 3PDT's (M12x0.75mm), so they are easy to swap out and all of the custom nuts and other mounting solutions will work for both.
While these are generally described as 'Footswitches', they're absolutely usable by hand, and very little force is needed to press the button down to engage the switch...the large button makes these easy to manipulate, and these make an audible clicking sound when they engage, so it's very clear when you've pressed down far enough.
